This Scandinavian-style house features one of our most compact and efficient floor plans. Large living and dining rooms, each with a fireplace, flank a compact central stairway. A dine-in kitchen with garden views connects the main rooms of the first floor. A hallway with laundry and storage connects to the 2-car garage. Four second-floor bedrooms, including a spacious master bedroom with private bath, provide plenty of sleeping space. A room-sized closet off the master bedroom connects to a back stairway and storage room over the garage that can be used as an office or studio space. A spacious third-floor attic can be configured for storage or for additional bedrooms and activities.

Before modernism, Scandinavians practiced a style known as functionalism, building houses in the simplest way possible to satisfy needs. Free of classical influence, and ornamentation, it was distinctly different than that of continental Europe. Such houses provided solid shelter from the harsh northern climate and comfortable interiors to escape into. The style was highly influential on American architecture, as immigrants settled in areas with a similar geography and climate to Scandinavia.
